Drone Warrior

I have not written about the gifts of Christmas, but I did receive one item that I anticipate will be appearing in my blog on a regular basis and so I need to announce its presence up front.

I received a DJI Spark Drone that is going to be adding a new dimension to the images and videos that I share. I named my drone Radio Flyer, because it is red, and it has been legally registered with the FAA.

My flying privileges had been revoked because of an ugly accident while flying Patrick's drone on Easter and so I am taking a slow and methodical approach to learning to fly. I am deliberately learning the controls and keeping the drone on a very tight leash until I become more proficient with it.
Finnegan, Chris, Patrick, and Me in an Open Field

That means I will be flying low, slow, and taking my time. I have to train myself to manage the controls properly. My natural instincts are exactly opposite how the controller is laid out. It is going to take a lot of training to get my hands moving properly.

End of Day Celebration

Fire pit in the Evening
Celebrations come in many forms. They can range from exuberant and loud to quiet and pensive.

Last evening, Chris and I celebrated the end of a busy and productive day around the fire pit in the yard.

One of the tasks during the day was to saw some of the larger limbs which had fallen from the trees into usable size firewood. We were able to enjoy the fruits of that labor as a hot fire coming from the fire pit.

Chris and Finn
Finn, our new Yorkie puppy, was there with us for part of the evening. We enjoyed the fire so much that instead of cooking dinner, we ordered pizza to eat by the fire.
After Darkness has Fallen

At one point during the evening, a fox ran by us. I think he was confused to see people in the yard after dark. Chris had heard the screams while I was away retrieving the pizza and the fox appeared from the brush just as I was returning. It was a interesting sight to see the fox run from me, but within about 15 feet of Chris as she was sitting in her chair by the fire.

It was a perfect ending to a day which has seen me make two trips to the landfill and perform an assorted number of tasks around the house.

Sunrise over the Ocean

Dawn, August 20, 2017
Ocean City, MD
I am a dawn kind of guy, people who know me know that to be true.

Sunday morning, I got up early to play golf and being at the beach I was treated to a predawn show over the ocean. The sun, still below the horizon, began to light up the eastern sky.

I love the ocean and I love the colors of the dawn.

It is a great way to start the day, especially when August is heating up before it ends in a short nine days.

I sat for a few minutes and enjoyed the show as the day began to arrive. And then it was off to the golf course. I do enjoy teeing off as the sun peaks through the trees at a low angle and the dew is heavy on the grass.

I appreciate the summer and the heat and the dampness and the mornings when it is warm when I walk outside.

End of the Day

Sunset. The end of the daylight and the time the night begins.

Chris and I experienced a magnificent sunset last evening from a restaurant where we were enjoying dinner.

We took the time to pause, admire, and image the setting sun. With the eclipse just now over 24 hours away, watching the sun took on a renewed interest it seemed with many of the other patrons. We were not the only ones imaging the red orb as it sank below the horizon in the west.

The day was ending. But the night was going to be alive with activity.

It is the cycle.

But it is always nice to pause and admire the beauty that so often surrounds us.

Troy Whittemore Golf Classic 2017

Troy on the Course

The Beautiful Day and the Course
Trumansburg Golf Club
August 12, 2017
It is amazing how quickly the years seem to pass. The now Fourth Annual Troy Whittemore Golf Classic was played on Saturday at the Trumansburg Golf Club in Trumansburg, New York. The tournament raises money to support the scholarship fund established in Troy's memory.

Despite the weather forecast which called for potential thunderstorms as the day went on, the weather was almost idyllic! The temperature was fabulous and the storms never materialized.

About 18 teams participated this year. While that is not good for the scholarship fund, it made the pace of play very enjoyable.

Carts at the Ready
The sponsors and the course did a great job of readying everything. And the hard working volunteers made the day a huge success. As always, the staff at the Trumansburg Golf Club were fantastic in getting everything ready and the course was in great shape.

Closest to the Line Winner
August 12, 2017

The skill games played along the way were a lot of fun. The winner of the closest to the line drive competition was in my foursome and the ball nearly landed on the line. We were all pretty amazed at how close the ball came to being on the line. We knew the shot was good, we just didn't know how good until we got to the spot. It did set us up for a GIR and a nice birdie on the hole!

Hole Sponsors
I learned something about Troy from his friends that I didn't know. Troy hated mulligans! I found that amusing and so like Troy. I can see him espousing that if you make a bad shot, play the ball where it lies or take the penalty. There are no "do overs!"

Golf tournaments provide for friendly competition. The foursome I was with did very well this year, for us, by finishing 6 under par for a 66. The tournament winners, however, were an astounding 17 under par for a 55. The second place team was at 59 and there were two teams tied with 60. In the end, the team I was on tied for 6th place. I forgot to take a picture of the final leaderboard!

I can't believe that the day has come and gone already. I am already planning for next year's Classic. Thanks to everyone who organized, volunteered, and worked to make this year's event a success.

The Best Images from Vacation

Fishing Boats
Saint Martin
Loggerhead Turtle
Jupiter Island Beach
It is over.

Sadly.

I have to return to the daily grind tomorrow armed with my vacation memories and images to remind me of the fun and relaxing time that I have enjoyed for the past two weeks.

So I took a few minutes to review many of the images taken during the vacation to find the best four. My favorite is of the fishing boats lined up in Saint Martin. It is a classic Caribbean image.

The loggerhead coming out of the surf along Jupiter Island Beach obviously is one of my favorites. It was such a fantastic event that the memory will stay with me for a long time.

Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse
Jupiter, Florida
The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse is a structure that I never grow weary of imaging. I should probably go back through all of the images that i have ever taken and put together a good of the lighthouse from various angles and lighting conditions.

And of course the image of the Castillo San Felipe del Morro in San Juan as the cruise shop sailed by is a stunning image as well. I enjoyed the brief visit to San Juan and want to return soon to spend a longer time enjoying the sights and learning more about the culture of Puerto Rico.

Ah, the memories. The images provide a key to recall the memories of a great vacation.

Loggerhead Encounter

Loggerhead Turtle Emerging form the Surf
Jupiter Island, Florida
July 11, 2017
A once in a lifetime encounter on a deserted beach occurred yesterday evening.

Chris and I along with Francis and Mary were at the Jupiter Island beach enjoying an end of the day happy hour when, about 25 yards from us, a loggerhead turtle crawled out of the surf and began to move up the beach to lay eggs. It was about 6PM in the evening and these things just do not happen at that time of day.

Loggerhead Turtle headed Back to the Ocean
Jupiter Island, Florida
July 11, 2017
I was in shock when I looked up the beach to the north and saw the turtle emerging from the sea. At first I thought it was a large piece of debris, but when I realized that it was a turtle, I let everyone in the group know.

Loggerheads, and other turtles, typically come ashore under the cover of darkness to lay their eggs. An article by the Sea Turtle Conservancy describes routine behaviors. The turtle we saw last night was intent on digging a nest and laying eggs during broad daylight.

Fortunately the beach was deserted, except for the four of us who remained silent and with only very limited movement until the turtle had completed laying her eggs and began the trek back to the ocean. It was only at that point that we approached her to take some closer images, but we never touched her or obstructed her path to the sea. During her entire time on land in the sun I was concerned that the turtle would overheat.

The movie above shows the event as best that I could record it. There is no video of the actual egg laying because we maintained a respectful distance from the turtle until she was finished.

We have been on the beach at night and seen turtles come out of the surf and we have watched them lay eggs, but to experience the entire event from start to finish is something that just does not happen during daylight hours.

The turtle last evening was intent on her mission. Three fishermen walked by at the surf line while she was laying, but the turtle was undeterred from her mission.

Throughout the event, we were in awe of the scene being played out before us. We had been on the beach when nest eruptions occur during the daylight hours and many small loggerheads begin their race to the ocean, but to see a magnificent turtle emerge from the surf during daytime was a sight to behold and I am very happy that I was able to record it.

As the Cruise Ends

Chasing Down a Freighter
July 8, 2017
Atlantic Ocean off the Coast of Florida
We experienced a sea day yesterday on our way back to Port Canaveral. I enjoy sea days because it forces me to explore the ship and try things that I might not otherwise experience. Sometimes, I get excited about watching the ship track down and overtake a freighter. Life can be that relaxing during a sea day.

Cats
Oasis of the Seas
July 8, 2017
Yesterday, for example, I attended the ship's performance of Cats. Yes, the former Broadway musical written during the early 1980's that I have failed to appreciate. The performance did eat up two-and-a-half hours and was actually very good. Perhaps it was because I understood the story this time. Even so, it got a bit long and it seems to end abruptly. Chris and I did get our picture taken with Old Deuteronomy during the intermission.
Cats on Oasis of the Seas

We also attended the comedy show during the night which provided a good send off with some humor specifically directed at life aboard a cruise ship.

Alas, our time aboard the Oasis of the Seas is nearly over. I am sitting in port waiting for breakfast and debarkation. I watched the ship arrive at the quay under the cover of darkness and have been watching the sun rise. It has bee beautiful to experience, but I admit, I much prefer the sunrise and the sunset at sea.

Iwayan from Bali
Vicky from India
But as the day dawns the activity begins to ramp up it is time to begin the process of departing. The good-byes have already begun as we enjoyed a meal with our wait staff for the last time. they were fun and it is always amazing how we develop a bond with the team and that makes the good-byes sad.

The memories are great and the images that I have captured help us to remember the fun and good times of escaping life for a week to sail away!

San Juan in Five Hours

Castillo San Felipe del Morro
San Juan, PR
July 6, 2017
One of the hardest aspects of visiting new places via cruise ship is the often incredibly short amount of time allotted to a shore day.

The Capitol of Puerto Rico
Yesterday was a prime example. We arrived in San Juan about 7AM and had to be back on the ship by 1:30PM. By the time we got off the ship it was almost 8AM and we were in the line to board by 1PM. Five hours to explore San Juan is not nearly enough. We met more than one person who told us that a minimum of one week is requires to visit San Juan and Puerto Rico just to get oriented.  I believe them.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro
From Oasis of the Seas upon departure
July 6, 2017
The ship docked near Old Town San Juan and since the shops and sights don't open until closed to 10AM we took a two-hour bus tour to get a general overview of the city.

Me by Cannon Balls
Castillo San Cristóbal
We saw same of the great sights and at the end of two hours were deposited in front of one of the forts that makes up the defense of the Old City. I love forts. We walked from Castillo San Felipe del Morro, which guards the harbors by being strategically places on the hill above the entrance, into the Old City for a shopping break and wound up at the other fort, Castillo San Cristobal, to end our visit to San Juan and Puerto Rico.
Chris about to Lose her Hat
Castillo San Cristóbal
Oasis of the Seas lurking in the background

It was much too fast!

But it was a great morning. We also purchased some trinkets and made good on a hot sauce promise for family.

There is so much more to see, but I really enjoyed the forts and was amazed to learn that during the high period of the fortifications about 2,000 troops would have been garrisoned. The first were each constructed for about 800 troops and the remainder would have been housed in town. There were some ferocious battles fought over San Juan between the Spanish and the British and the Dutch.

It was a great and fast day. Being back on the ship by 1:30PM meant we had a long afternoon to enjoy the memories made during the morning.

Today, we are onto Labadee, Haiti for some relaxing, I hope, beach time.

End of the School Year Party

End of School Year Party
June 14, 2017
For the students and teachers of the Howard County Public School System today is day one of summer vacation!

What that meant was the the end of the school year party was conducted in my pool yesterday afternoon. And it was a fantastic party.

I really enjoy sharing the pool with friends and family. It makes all of the work and expense worth it when others can share the fun and joy.

The end of the school year party has almost become an annual event and Chris and i look forward to it every year. It gives us a reason and a date to have everything up and running. This year, despite the forecast for thunderstorms, the weather was fabulous!

And another party is in the books. Cue summer, let's play!

My Girl

Makayla
June 3, 2017
Chris snapped a few images of my girl, Makayla, yesterday that are some of the best ones ever taken of her.

Makayla
She was in the yard relaxing while Chris and I were working. The sun really caught the highlights and these are just great shots of a great dog.

Kaye, as I call her, is very faithful and loves to be around. She is driven by food and treats but is the greatest watchdog on the planet. She keeps track of everything happening in and around our yard.

Raindrop Daggers

Raindrop Daggers Falling from the Sky
May 31, 2017
It was a sudden thunderstorm last evening that cooled the evening air and deposited rain across the land. It lasted about 45 minutes but as the sun came out, the raindrops created some interesting opportunities.

Raindrop Daggers
As the rain fell in the sunlight, I attempted to image them. In the end they came out looking like daggers falling onto the land.

It was interesting.

The rain falling in the sunlight against the green background. It isn't something I see every day.

I enjoyed watching the storm and i am glad that they were not real daggers falling from the clouds.

Flowers of Spring

Irises Along the Street
The appear in many places during the Springtime. Flowers!

Sometimes they can be stunning, such as this group of irises I discovered while walking along the street after the strings concert at Waugh Chapel Elementary School.

I was impressed by the irises and I remembered that we used to have some, but they never prospered like these clearly have done.

I see the flowers of Springtime everywhere, I just need to look for them.

On the Deck

In celebration of a beautiful morning and before I hit the golf course, I am sitting on my back deck enjoying the sounds of nature, interrupted by the noise of civilization.

Through the Screen
My Very Green Backyard
April 29, 2017
The trees are leafing and the green has fully returned to my backyard sanctuary. The birds are busy chirping and I hear at least six different calls simultaneously. I wish I was better at identifying birds from their calls.

Cutting through the sounds of nature, however, are the passing jets flying out of BWI screaming to make altitude and get on their way to their destinations. Additionally, the sound of trucks in the warehouses occasionally drown out the birds songs.

Despite the unwanted noise, I still enjoy the sounds of life and the rebirth of Spring.

I just wish, sometimes, that I lived further away from the noise of civilization. But that written, I also need to enjoy what I am blessed with and appreciate my own backyard.

Happy the Rains Came

Circular Stairway at
Creek's Edge Winery
Yesterday's rain completely changed my plans for the day.

The day was scheduled to be devoted to baseball with the annual GORC parade in the morning and another game for the GORC 10U Intramural Dodgers in the afternoon. Both events were canceled due to the wet conditions.

The cancellations meant that the day suddenly became a blank page waiting to be filled with unscheduled activities. The first was the obligatory springtime trip to the landfill and recycling center. There is always an accumulation of junk that needs to move along and Chris and I managed a truckload yesterday. We were on our way to the dump by 8:30 AM which was the time the parade was supposed to form.

On the way home, we stopped at Home Depot and did some shopping. Being Springtime, there is always yard work that needs to be done and in this case we bought some grass seed to fill in the holes in the yard. We also priced a new smoker as our old rusted one had just been delivered to the metal recycling area of the landfill.

Now the afternoon, what to do for the afternoon on a rainy day. Visit wineries, of course, was the answer. We hit the road and headed west to visit Big Cork, where we had a wine club distribution to retrieve. We enjoyed a tasting at the winery and then decided to find a winery we had not previously visited. After some work on the cell phone, the decision was Creek's Edge Winery about 30 minutes from where we were, but somewhat on the way back home.

I will be writing up a full review in my wine blog, but visiting Creek's Edge was a great choice for the afternoon and we spent a few hours watching the rain fall and sampling some very nice Virginia wines in a magnificent and relaxing atmosphere.

I'm happy the rains came. Chris and I enjoyed a great unplanned day!

Palm Trees in the Wind

Palm Tree in the Wind
I was going to title this "A Study of Palm Trees" but I decided that images of two palm trees blowing in the wind did not constitute a study.

Afternoon on the Intracoastal
Jupiter Island, Florida
April 12, 2017
The Atlantic Ocean has been rough during my entire vacation thus far. Three foot waves crashing onto the beaches and a steady wind that makes the nearly 80 degree temperatures seem cool.

The beauty of one of the beaches that we frequent is that the ocean is on one side and there are calmer beaches on the intracoastal waterway side. We found respite from the wind and waves yesterday on the intracoastal side and had an thoroughly enjoyable afternoon on the beach. It was as if we had out own private beach from which to watch the yachts sail the channel to the sea.

Palm Tree in the Storm
But it was the palm trees in the wind, illuminated by the sun with the dark storm clouds behind them that caught my eye. Standing alone, as palm trees often do, against the worst storms that the weather can throw against them.
Palm Tree on the Dune

I enjoy palm trees.

What more can I say. I know that I am far enough south when palms begin to appear with increasing regularity and frequency. I know that they potentially can survive northern winters, but they do not grow naturally in the wilds of Maryland. I even found a website that details the correct types of palms to purchase for the varied Maryland climate zones.

Maybe I will start landscaping with palm trees and sand.

Critters Along the Beach

Jupiter Island
April 10, 2017
Walking along the beach in the morning can be an educational experience.

Pelicans on Patrol
Yesterday the waves were crashing on the beach and red flags were flying.

We found the beach to full of life. The sea birds were everywhere and there was even a small portuguese man o' war washed up among the sea grasses.

The waves obviated any idea we had of getting into the water, but the walk along the beach was exciting.
Portuguese Man O' War on the Beach

It is too early in the season for turtles, but we did look to see if any had happened onto the beach during the night. There didn't seem to be any.

Of course, the day before we had happened across a small crab along the beach as well.

The sky above is full of life as well. The pelicans cruise the beach looking for a meal and a family of ospreys aggressively hunt above the shore as well.

I love the beach!

Remember, a bad day at the beach is better than a good day at the office!

Day 3 is Day 1

Palm Trees
I'm in Florida
Today is essentially the first day of my Spring vacation. It is, however, the third day of my vacation.

Chris on the Beach
We arrived in Florida last evening, uneventfully. The ride from Orlando seemed longer than normal, but at least we finally overcame the scheduling impact from the storms of Thursday. We heard that some people whose travel plans were disrupted by the weather were not getting out until Sunday. We felt lucky when the plane roared into the sky and Baltimore was in our proverbial "rear-view mirror."

Today was almost idyllic. We have been to the beach twice to enjoy the sun, wind, and waves. We even switched beaches from the ocean side to the intercostal side to be warmer and to be able to get into the water. The ocean surf was rough and yellow flags were flying along the guarded beaches this morning.
The Ocean Between My Knees

It was a great start to my first day in Florida. Alas, however, there was a trip to the local grocery store sandwiched in there. But, I guess we need some food to eat.

I am just enjoying the day, the sun and the warmth!

I am happy that we finally arrived!

A Sad Image from the Storm

Tete-a-Tete Daffodils in the Snow
The nor'easter that blew into the region during the early part of the week was relatively kind to the Baltimore region as compared to Central New York where over two feet of snow fell.

There were, however, casualties from the cold, icy, snowy mix that wound-up covering my lawn. The tete-a-tete daffodils struggled to keep their bloom in the light but became overwhelmed by the onslaught of the precipitation.

I was careful as I shoveled the walkway, which was covered by about three inches of slush by the time I got around to it, not to cover the struggling sign of springtime. Just a short few days ago these same flowers were gaily proclaiming the arrival of Spring.

Monday is the official beginning of Spring. I hope the snow will be gone by then, at least from my yard!

Out the Windshield - Snowy Morning

Snow Kissed Trees
March 3, 2017
The Baltimore region has been spared the worst ravages of Winter this season. Even Friday morning when snow actually fell, it was a light dusting.

There was only a trace of snow at my house when I departed, but as I drove south towards work the trace turned into about a half-inch which presented a view along the road that I just had to capture.

The snow kissed trees against the blue sky of dawn created an image of Winter's passing. Hopefully, this will be the last snowfall of Winter and I can turn my attention to Springtime and outdoor activities.
