What I Did on Veterans Day

I was very busy on Veterans Day. I think I would have been better off to go to work, because I worked hard around the house.

I played some too.

Here is how the day went down.

I wrote my Veterans Day blog.

Driving Range
Then, because the morning was cold (36 degrees) and the lawn was still wet, I decided to go to a driving range and hit some balls, since I wasn't going be able to play golf. I also had one club re-gripped because it was a disaster. I hit 168 golf balls in about an hour and a half while the sun crawled higher up into the sky and the day began to get going.

Back at the house it was time to finish cutting down the grasses that form the privacy fence around the pool. I love the grasses, but every year they must be cut down and removed. It is not a hard job, but it isn't a lot of fun because they make my arms swell a bit because I am a bit allergic to them. Even though I wear a long sleeve shirt, they manage to get under the fabric around my wrists.
My Truck loaded with the Grasses

Then it was off to the landfill to recycle the grasses with my trusty dog Makayla. She loves to go for road trips and I like having her along for the ride. Speaking of the ride--wow, two delays. First, I got a mile down the read before I realized that I had a soft tire so it was back to the house for air. Then I realized I needed gas--ugh! Why didn't I fill the tank on Friday when I knew it was low?

Back at the house it was time for lunch.

Then Christmas decorations. I do exterior decorations on Veterans Day, especially if it is a nice day, because then I don't have to worry about them later. For this event, I called in reinforcements: Patrick and Tina. The small army working together completed the task in record time and by 4:00 we were done! Yay.

But the day wasn't over yet.

I have been working to make the fire table have real flames for over two weeks. I have ordered a number of things to make this happen--and have been thwarted. Today, though, the FEDEX man delivered the final part--an adjustable regulator. With Patrick's assistance the fire table was transformed from a warming table to one with true flames and became a true place to enjoy.

But wait, there's more, it was racquetball evening. By 5:30PM I was on the racquetball court playing a match.

I was there for a bit and then it was home, arriving about 7:30 PM.

Dinner and a glass of wine around the refurbished fire table was the perfect exclamation point on the day.

A great day. Very busy and full.

Christmas Tree Hunting - December 2007

Ethan is off on his own. It is amazing how a huge field of Christmas Trees and one little boy can be such a perfect match. It was cold--but Ethan didn't seem to mind. There were places to explore and things to see and do. He especially liked the creek at the end of the road and it took a great deal of restraint to keep him from going into the creek. He found the ice on the water fascinating. Finding the "perfect" Christmas tree almost became secondary. I can almost hear him saying-- "Follow me, the road goes this way."

Best Pictures 2007 - Key Largo, April

So what are you feeling like today? We found this pelican sitting on a post and he made the best picture. Look deep into his eyes and ask yourself--are you a fish? Today was my first day back at work since just before Christmas and I can tell you this--the pelican has a much better outlook on life than I do right now. Who would have though so much stuff would pile up. So do you want a pet pelican? Actually, who would want to clean up after one? Bet it smells like dead fish! Check out the bird sanctuary.

Great Pictures 2007 - Singer Island, FL July 7, 2007

This is the reason I love Florida in the summer. Here we are at Singer Island, John D. MacArthur Beach State Park and the beach is ours. The day was threatening thunderstorms, but the snorkeling was awesome at the rocks right off shore. The water was clear and the animal life varied. Sure isn't Ocean City, MD on a hot summer's day. The walk to the beach can be long, but the reward is certainly worth it in the end. Over the month of July we visited this park on three occasions and this day was by far the best overall day of snorkeling we had at the park.

Colorado Springs - May 2007

OK--so it's not all about the beach. We traveled to Colorado Springs in May to attend the High School graduation of our nephew. And we do love the mountains (although the scuba can be a bit tough). This picture encompasses two of the sights--Garden of the Gods (in the foreground) and Pike's Peak. The clouds in the sky add to complete the scene. I'm not sure a cloudless sky would have worked better. Everyone needs to get a Rocky Mountain high sometime and there's no better place than Colorado Springs. I cannot fathom what people see about Denver--it is a big city with big city traffic and congestion. But the Springs still retains some of the foothills charm that makes it a great place to visit and, according to my brother-in-law, a great place to live. Though the beaches can be a bit rocky and the water sure is colder than Florida!

Sunrise, July 30th, 2007 - Jupiter, FL

I know this day--it is the saddest day of the year and it is the day when the fun of summer melts away into the drudgery of work again. And that is my love standing, silhouetted in the predawn light on the beach of Jupiter Island. I remember the mosquitoes--they were eating me alive (I forgot bug spray) but I also remember the dragonflys racing along the beach consuming as many mosquitoes as possible. From this awesome beginning we ended the day on the Autotrain enroute to Lorton, VA. My mind always returns to this beach when I needs to find my "happy place."

Best Pictures 2007 - Jupiter, Florida in July

I love this beach. It is almost never like this, but on this day in early July the seas were rough and the waves were crashing on the rocks. It was beautiful, although it was too rough to swim. This beach is on Jupiter Island and on a good day during the summer there may be two or three other people enjoying the ocean. It is a great place to snorkel--we usually see lots of fish and often some Nurse sharks. This summer, though, and we were there the entire month of July, we did not see any sharks off this beach. I had the opportunity to scuba with Patrick, my son, off this beach and it was a lot of fun. Not too deep--about 15 feet, but a great assortment of things to see.

Great Pictures of 2007 - Islamorada, Florida Keys

This picture was taken from near the table we were sitting at for dinner at the Islamorada Fish Company on April 1, 2007. Chris and I had spent the day in Key West enjoying the sights of the town and sand of the beaches. We were on our way back to Key Largo where we had rented a small efficiency apartment and stopped for dinner at sunset. The day was warm and the evening was fabulous. The sunset over the water was stunning. Chris took this picture. She has a great eye and the memories it evokes make me warm and happy every time I remember that evening and our trip.
