Three Bridges and a Bike

Getting back out on my bike is almost a definite when the weather gets nice. And the weather was great yesterday.

I decided to try a different route and didn't really think about it in advance, but the route crosses three large bridges--two of them being drawbridges.


Older drawbridges, like the Donald Ross Drawbridge, can be problematic. Usually they have steel grates across the channel and road or racer bike tires sometimes slip. Fortunately, I have equipped my bike with all terrain tires which are a wider and do not tend to slip on the grates.  

I had ridden along the ocean to the southern point of my trek before. The new part was at the left turn onto Donald Ross. It was here the traffic got a bit tight as I was in the left turning lane to make the turn. I was very aware of the cars and went very wide to they could turn onto the roadway. I had never ridden the Donald Ross Bridge before and it has a pleasantly wide approach! The bridge has the aforementioned steel grates, but I handled them without issue. 

I wasn't actually sure of the distance I would ride, but I enjoyed the different scenery. The sidewalks along Donald Ross and A1A are very nice and kept me away from the traffic. Some drivers are not aware of the 3 foot rule and I really hate it when I think a bumper is going to brush my leg. 

The ride turned out to be a quarter-mile shorter than my usual almost 18-mile ride, but the elevation changes associated with the bridges made it a bit tougher than usual. I liked the ride and will keep it for the basis of another change-up ride in the future.

The cold snap has passed and yesterday I was able to return to the street for a ride. It felt good to be back out there, even though I had multiple layers of clothing to retain my body heat.

The light clouds allowed the sun to keep me warm whilst riding. I was out early enough that I was surprised by the amount of traffic. I guess 30 minutes really does make a difference. I stopped for a moment on the bridge over the North Fork of the Loxahatchee River in Tequesta to document the day. The light ripples on the river made the reflection of the clouds seem like an impressionist painting.

It was a great morning for a ride. 

I was remembering last Friday as we set out on a boat from Manatee Pocket for an adventure on the water. We had a lot of fun with Nicole. I can't believe it had been already a week since we were on the water. Yes, Finn is in the image. Look under Chris' arm sitting next to her.

Reflections on the SOTU

State of the Union 2026

 It has been a very wild week in terms of news.

I took yesterday to reflect on the State of the Union Address. It is hard with a speech that long to really grasp the salient points. I also got caught up a bit in the theatrics of the event and needed time to cool-off from the inaccuracies which were presented. 

I found a good source to Fact Check the statements of the speech. It is FactCheck.Org and Trump's 2026 State of the Union address has a lot of incorrect facts. 

I watched competing news channels yesterday to get a sense of the Right vs Left view of the speech. What i discovered was especially disturbing. 

While the Left-leaning networks were discussing the facts and the policy initiatives, the Right-leaning ignored the inaccuracies and the bad facts to focus on the Democrats and their responses to the speech. Neither side hailed the speech as a positive roadmap for the future of America and there was general disagreement with the actual State of the Union!

A lot of discussion on both sides was about the incendiary statement made by Trump:

The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens (Trump SOTU, February 24, 2026)

Wow, this statement has been so misquoted that I was glad to have seen and heard personally. 

Trump called on those who believed this statement to be true to stand. All the republicans stood, none of the democrats stood. The statement was a calculated set-up because it is not true! All those who stood are ignorant of the Constitution.

What is the duty of the American government? It is clearly defined in the Preamble of the Constitution:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. (The Constitution)


So what is the State of the Union? 

Divided.

Turtle Fest 2026

 Sunday Chris, Nicole and I attended Turtle Fest at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center

This fest was much larger than the seafood festival we attended on Saturday AND it was FREE! Yes, we enjoyed the fest and learned about the turtles for free. No admission charge and no parking fee. In addition, they provided parking at a local business and bussed us to the Turtle Center for, yup you guessed it--FREE!

We had a great time wandering through the exhibits and chatting with the artisans. The location right next to the ocean, along Ocean Drive was perfect. The band provided entertaining music and the atmosphere was very festive.

We spent some time learning about rescued Kemp's Ridley sea turtles which had been brought to the center for recovery. These turtles are recovering and will be released near Cape Canaveral when healthy. That is their normal wintering waters. The story goes that the juvenile Kemp's Ridley sea turtles often overstay their summer areas off Cape Cod and become cold stunned. This year with the excessively cold weather it happened to more than could be accommodated in the region and many were transported to the Loggerhead Marine Life Center for recovery. 

I highly recommend the Turtle Fest next year, but a visit to the Marinelife Center is a must whenever visiting the area.

Out to the Ball Game

 It was a cool, clear day; perfect for baseball. Chris, Nicole, and I headed to Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium to watch a thrilling, but slow moving game between the Marlins and the Cardinals. Both teams host their home Spring Training games at the stadium. When they play each other, they switch off being the home team. Yesterday, the Cardinals were the home team. That is important later.

We arrived at the park early enough to enjoy stopping at a bar for a pre-game drink and snack in downtown Abacoa. Abacoa is a community in Jupiter, FL, that has charm and should not be missed. Arriving at the park early also meant we secured some free parking!

Sitting in the sun we were hot, even though the temperature only briefly reached 60 degrees. When the shade overtook our seats, we got cold! It was one of those days! But the game was at least interesting, especially the bottom of the 9th inning when the Marlins blew a 4-2 lead and the game ended on a run-scoring wild-pitch for a Cardinals victory. It is good to be the home team.

I felt a bit guilty being able to attend a baseball game while the Northeast is digging out from a blizzard. But then reminded myself that is why I retired to Florida. We still experience cold, for instance this morning the temperature is 42 degrees. The good news is that the return of 70s and 80s is only two days away. 

I love singing Take Me Out to the Ball Game during the seventh inning stretch. 

The Orioles come to Jupiter in two weeks! I'll be there and I will be wearing baseball attire.

Monday Musings - February 23, 2026

 1. February is coming to a close. Today is the final Monday of the second month of the year. There are only 44 Mondays remaining in 2026.

2. It was festival weekend. We attended the Jupiter Seafood Fest and the Loggerhead Marine Life Center Turtle Fest. We had a great time at both, but the Turtle Fest seems to be outpacing the Seafood Fest in terms of diversity and size.

3. The colder weather returned to South Florida overnight. It is a very chilly 47 degrees this morning after we enjoyed low 80s for the past four days. How rude! Today's high will only be in the 60s and we have another outdoors event planned--a Spring Training baseball game. Well, I guess it will really feel like springtime in Maryland when we get to the ballpark today. 

4. Does anyone else think our president behaves like a petulant child when things do not go his way? And then he attacks those who are giving him the decisions he dos not want to hear. Seems that he does not realize that if he didn't try to break the law the courts would not rule against him. Oh yea, he believes that he is above the law! Well, the experiment with the unitary executive seems to be a failure. So much for Project 2025.

It was a beautiful South Florida day to enjoy the Jupiter Seafood Fest. The white clouds in the sky gave a bit of respite from the blazing hot sun which sent the temperature soaring to 84 degrees.

We arrived at the fest early to enjoy some time wandering around the displays and exhibitors before the crushing crowds arrived. It was an great fun.

The seafood options were diverse as were the shopping options. There was music at the main stage that entertained us during the early afternoon while sitting in the shade. The Bryant Thomas Band was fun to watch. I have to admit, I have never before seen a trombone take the lead in a rock/country band. It was inspiring and fun to watch. While we enjoyed the music, we also were keeping tabs on the Orioles Spring Training game against the Pirates which eventually got out of control resulting in an 8-2 loss. But, here is a clip of the trombone from the band.

The variety of exhibitors was great. I always like to visit with them. We also enjoyed some of the food and drink! Although I usually opt for ribs at an event like this, I had a Poke Bowl and therefore actually enjoyed some seafood.

I like this event because although there is an admission charge, parking is free and easy. Last week, the parking for ArtiFest cost as much as an admission ticket. Go figure.

Beach, Boat, and Shopping

 Fantastic!

That is how I describe our boating adventure yesterday. Chris, Nicole, Finnegan, and I  headed out of Pirates Cove Marina in the Manatee Pocket just before 10 AM to enjoy a full day centered around boating activities. We were embarked on my new favorite boat, a 22 foot Bayliner, which has a ladder on the bow for easier beach and sandbar access.

The water was relatively smooth as we made our way to Peck's Lake and our first stop to enjoy time on the beach. Along the way we saw a manatee! The water was very cloudy and so we did not get a great look at the manatee, but we saw it as it surfaced a couple times. I kept the boat a safe distance so we could watch as best we could without endangering the manatee.

The beach was great! It was sunny with a nice breeze and temperatures into the 80s! We stayed for a while, but then needed to head out for Stuart for lunch and shopping. During the unloading process from the boat to the beach, my flip-flops broke! A terrible wardrobe malfunction. I determined that I would replace them in Stuart--but it was a long walk from the dock to the store mostly barefoot. I did find a nice new pair of flip-flops fairly rapidly once in the city. I had forgotten what it felt like to walk on nice, new, squishy flip-flops.

There was a lot of traffic on the ICW and St Lucie River yesterday. A lot more than I am used to seeing and it really tested my boating skills. The wakes from the bigger boats were a problematic. Chris hates it when I crash through and so I slow down to push through them. There was one relatively tight section of the ICW where I was faced with two other motor craft headed south while approaching two large sailboats headed north. Everybody did perfectly, I guess the sheriff's boat as part of the procession helped keep everyone in line.

We enjoyed our time in Stuart, but the boat needed to be returned by 3:30 PM and so we only had about a half-hour to shop after enjoying lunch along Osceola Street. 

The trip back to the marina was rougher than the ride to Stuart. The wind had grown stronger while we were enjoying time in Stuart which meant the water had gone from light chop to choppy with whitecaps! The chop, coupled with all the other boating traffic, meant crossing wakes became a bit trickier. I hit one a little to square and threw spray over the entire length of the boat. Chris was not amused. I was not spared and had to wipe water from my sunglasses so we could continue on. 

We made it back to the marina with 15 minutes to spare! All agreed, it was a great day on the water.

We do not often get the opportunity to sit around our fire pit in the evening. Well, it is not a real pit, it is a small tabletop, ethanol fueled pit. Usually, it is too warm outside to actually enjoy the flame, but last evening was an exception.

The temperature was perfect and the evening was just made for relaxing on the veranda. We had enjoyed dinner at Tiki52 and retreated to the house for the evening. Nicole is visiting from Maryland and the comfortable weather provided a great respite from the snow and ice that she had been experiencing.

We enjoyed chatting and catching up around the fire as night fell deepened us.

Today is a boat day. Yay! It has been a while since we have been on the water.

 The other evening, we enjoyed dinner and adult beverages at our favorite watering hole. The weather was perfect, OK, the breeze off the water was a a bit cool and strong at times. 

We enjoyed watching the birds. Mostly we were blessed with Fish Crows. Sadly, there were too few pelicans or other birds. But, the crows provided comic relief. 

Finnegan joined us for the evening and enjoyed trying to play with other dogs. There was a lot of activity at the restaurant due to the moderate temperatures and the prevalence of the Snow Birds, who have fully arrived for the season. It is a bit strange that "in-season" is February and March. We have some additional visitors due to the start of the MLB Spring Training games. The Marlins and Cardinals team logos are beginning to apperar everywhere. 

The traffic has become a problem at times. There are intersections that I avoid when I need to make a left turn. Instead, I drive around the block to get to a traffic light to ensure that I can safely make the turn. 

Well, it is Thursday or Friday Eve! I am looking forward to a summer-like boat day tomorrow, finally. February in South Florida can be fantastic.

A Betrayal


 Steven Colbert's interview with James Talarico on Monday evening helped clarify an important aspect of what is happening right now in America. 

Yes, I watched the interview on YouTube! CBS, based upon a request from the FCC, did not want the interview aired and so Colbert put the interview on his YouTube channel. The decision by CBS was likely a mistake since the interview was seen by more people on YouTube than regular interviews on Colbert's show. Watching the interview was worth the effort. 

Talarico helped me understand the nature of Christian Nationalism. 

Talarico is a Texas state lawmaker studying to be a minister, who criticizes the Republican use of Christianity as a political weapon. Such politicization of Christianity both distorts politics and cheapens faith, he says. The true way to practice Christianity is simple but not easy, he says: it is to love your neighbor. Political positions should grow out of that to feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, and heal the sick. “[T]here is nothing Christian about Christian nationalism,” he told Colbert. “It is the worship of power in the name of Christ, and it is a betrayal of Jesus of Nazareth.” (Letters from an American) (Highlighting added)

That pretty much says it all! Not that I had really wondered, but it was reassuring to hear someone else say it so clearly.

 The week got off to a easy start with the President's Day holiday celebrated yesterday. President's Day marks the end of the holiday season that began with Labor Day, as there are no more Federal Holidays until Memorial Day. I remember how I used to look forward to three-day weekends!

This morning dawned clear and bright. I took the image through the screen on the veranda. It looks as if it is going to be a great week! We are expecting temperatures to return into the 80s and I am fortunate to have a boat reserved for Friday! On the downside, after the beautiful weather this week, next Monday starts cold and I have tickets to a Spring Training game.

I am excited that baseball is back! I am also happy that warmed weather has returned to South Florida.

Monday Musings - February 16, 2026

 1. February is half completed. Today is the thrid Monday of the month with only one more to enjoy. There are 45 Mondays remaining in 2026. 

2. Yesterday marked a Sunday without football or baseball. It may have been the only Sunday of the year where neither sport was being competed. But not to fear! Spring Training baseball games begin this week and so not another Sunday in 2026 will pass without either football or baseball!

3. Chris and I attended ArtiGras yesterday. It is a large event dedicated to artisans selling their creations for premium prices. We saw many very nice creations, but could not determine when we might display them in our home had we decided to buy them. It is not inexpensive to attend the show as tickets were $15 each (plus service fees) and parking was another $15. Add in a little food and drink and just for the opportunity to view the wares of the artisans made it a $100 day just to walk around. We arrived shortly after the event opened for the day and were able to spend some time enjoying the show before the suffocating crowds arrived.

4. The Olympics continues. The U.S. team has won more medals this past week and moved into third place overall, but still seems to underperforming. I wonder if the apparent underperformance is due to lack of preparation or whether judges are being tougher on the U.S. team due to the developing geo-political situation? One case in point is the French judge in the couples ice skating. 

5. Today in HistoryOn February 16, 1923, in Thebes, Egypt, English archaeologist Howard Carter enters the sealed burial chamber of the ancient Egyptian ruler King Tutankhamen.

Because the ancient Egyptians saw their pharaohs as gods, they carefully preserved their bodies after death, burying them in elaborate tombs containing rich treasures to accompany the rulers into the afterlife. In the 19th century, archeologists from all over the world flocked to Egypt, where they uncovered a number of these tombs. Many had long ago been broken into by robbers and stripped of their riches.


When Carter arrived in Egypt in 1891, he became convinced there was at least one undiscovered tomb–that of the little known Tutankhamen, or King Tut, who lived around 1400 B.C. and died when he was still a teenager. Backed by a rich Brit, Lord Carnarvon, Carter searched for five years without success. In early 1922, Lord Carnarvon wanted to call off the search, but Carter convinced him to hold on one more year.

 How do I describe our Valentine's Day dinner? 

Fabulous! 

Better than any restaurant because the meal flowed smoothly and the evening was not punctuated by noise from other patrons. Sometimes it gets so loud in restaurants that it is hard to hear the conversation at our own table. 

Last evening was a perfect setting for our loving wives.

The four course sea food meal consisted of beet salad, scallops on pasta, corvina entree, and cheese cake. The guys enjoyed oysters on the half-shell in addition.

It was a well orchestrated event with the timing of each course being superior. Each course was paired expertly with the perfect wine to highlight the light flavors of the food.

But more important than the food, hard as that is to imagine, were the friends with whom we shared the meal. We enjoyed varied conversation as the evening progressed. 

I wish that I had taken a few more images because the dishes were works of culinary art in and of themselves.

A friend and I are preparing a sumptuous dinner for our wives tonight. We shopped yesterday for the fixings and believe that, not counting the wine, we will spend about $110 on a special dinner for four people. We would expect to pay at least that per person for a Valentines Day dinner in a restaurant.

Dinner should be fantastic, of course, if it goes according to plan. 

Chris likes yellow roses, not the ubiquitous red ones, and I was able to secure a dozen of her favorites. She was happy that I remembered flowers and there may be a card for later today since the flowers are already on the table.

The Beach Beckoned

 We did it!

Yesterday afternoon, Chris and I made it to the beach for happy hour and dinner. We ordered subs and enjoyed a very nice late afternoon and early evening on the beach.

Except for the birds, we had the beach to ourselves--and this is one of the main beaches in the Jupiter area. The surf was calm and the wind off the ocean, while cool was not uncomfortable. We dressed appropriately and were quite comfortable.

We enjoyed the birds who seemed very brave in approaching us for handouts. I went about knee deep into the 72 degree water--it was too cold to actually immerse myself into the ocean. It remember that as a boy growing up in Upstate NY, we believed that once the water hit about 70 degrees it was swimming time in the lakes. I'm not sure I'd enjoy that now and I also understand why the adults who accompanied me never got into the water. It is just too cold!

For our first foray to the beach for 2026, it was a great time. We stayed until just after sunset, leaving as the beach succumbing to the evening darkness.

I managed to get out two days in a row on my bike. I rode 18 miles again yesterday around Tequesta. That has been a feat lately with the cold weather. But the weather is becoming very nice, except for this morning with the threat of showers--it is supposed to be the dry season.

My Ray-Ban Wayfarer Smart Glasses have stopped accepting a charge and so I no longer have the use of the "smart' functions. They are effectively just expensive sunglasses. I miss listening to music and the news during my ride. This is the second pair of Wayfarer glasses that have developed the "will not charge" issue, but now I am out of warranty. there do not seem to be a lot of options to fix a bad battery, I am still researching. 

On a good not, however, I asked for and received a "smart" biking helmet for Christmas. I finally set up the Bluetooth and was able to get all of my media desires during yesterday's ride. I like my new helmet as it is very orange and had lights to increase my visibility to vehicles with which I am sharing the road.

Happy Hump Day

We have again hit the hump of the week.

I continue to be amazed at how I wander my way through each week even though I do no longer have a job that requires my attendance. But, the day characterizations continue to help me stay cognizant of each day. 

Yesterday was a more normal South Florida day. The temperature reached a pleasant high of 77 degrees and the morning warmed into the 60s by about 9 AM, which allowed me to enjoy a very nice 18-mile bike ride. It was only my second ride of February, but it was definitely an enjoyable ride mostly because it was not cold. 

Chris and I also enjoyed our Tiki Tuesday last evening. The weather was almost perfect, it began with nice bright sun but it became a bit cool as the evening progressed. The marina was very quiet, probably due to the recent weather. 

Today is hump day! The week can only get better from here!

A New Sports Season Dawns


 Now that football is over, baseball is ready to spring onto the scene. (Did you catch the double entendre there?)

Orioles pitchers and catchers report tomorrow to Sarasota. Those participating in the World Baseball Classic  (WBC) reported yesterday. Yay. There are more than a few Orioles playing in the WBC this year. Sadly, that usually does not bode well for their performance upon returning to the team. The WBC games and innings add-up when tacked on to a 162 game season.

According to the most current information I have, ten Orioles will be participating in the WBC:

    • Henderson will play for Team USA, marking his WBC debut. 

    • Kremer returns for Team Israel, his third appearance. 

    • O'Neill joins Team Canada.

    • Bradfield represents Team Panama

    • Garcia, Espada, and Vázquez are on Team Puerto Rico, stepping in after key players were denied insurance. 

    • Long pitches for Great Britain

    • Ashman joins Team Canada.

    • Cruz, a 26-year-old lefty, plays for Cuba

I am still committed to soccer (football in the rest of the world) with Arsenal actually not folding this year. So far! Go Gunners!

Turning to the Olympics--I wish they were a bit more exciting. As of this morning, the U.S. has but two medals--both gold. For such a promising team to get spanked the way they are is sad. It looks as if the team may get possibly earn two more medals today. 

Finally, in high school baseball, Jax is preparing for his senior year at Arundel High. He was rated with the second best curveball among high school seniors in Maryland. I am looking forward to seeing more than a few games.

Monday Musings - February 9, 2026

1. Happy second Monday of February. We should celebrate. There are 46 Mondays remaining in the year.

2. The Super Bowl was quite an event last evening. It was a hard game to watch, being a defensive struggle for most of the affair. I was happy to see Seattle claim the crown as the Super Bowl Champion. I didn't do too bad with my prediction of the final score, although the game was not as close as I thought it might be. I predicted 24-21 Seattle and the final score was 29-13 Seattle.

3. I am hugely excited that temperatures here in South Florida are recovering after the freeze. Chris and I saw the remains of a lizard that didn't make it because of the cold yesterday. I believe there are going to be a lot less lizards around the yard for the remainder of the year. 

4. I did some research this morning to determine how the alternate Super Bowl Halftime Show did against the actual Super Bowl Halftime show. That performance [The alternate halftime show] attracted only an estimated 5 million viewers against Bad Bunny’s 135 million, which has otherwise served to mark the Latin musician’s performance as the most watched NFL halftime show in history. 5. Oblivious to decency and the ability to recognize when there might a be a problem. the President called Olympian Hunter Hess, "a real loser." President Trump wrote this in response to a response Hess gave to a reporter. Hess said, in part, “There’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of and think a lot of people aren’t,” Hess said. “If it aligns with my moral values, I feel like I’m representing it. But just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean that I represent everything that’s going on in the U.S.” (NY Times) I wonder if the President's ears were burning? 

6. Note: I will no longer be quoting the Washington Post in my blog as a protest against the changes at the formerly venerable newspaper. I have also canceled my subscription. 

7. Today in HistoryOn February 9, 1971, pitcher Leroy “Satchel” Paige becomes the first Negro League veteran to be nominated for the Baseball Hall of Fame. In August of that year, Paige, a pitching legend known for his fastball, showmanship and the longevity of his playing career, which spanned five decades, was inducted. Joe DiMaggio once called Paige “the best and fastest pitcher I’ve ever faced.”

Paige was born in Mobile, Alabama, most likely on July 7, 1906, although the exact date remains a mystery. He earned his nickname, Satchel, as a boy when he earned money carrying passengers’ bags at train stations. Baseball was segregated when Paige started playing baseball professionally in the 1920s, so he spent most of his career pitching for Negro League teams around the United States. During the winter season, he pitched for teams in the Caribbean and Central and South America. As a barnstorming player who traveled thousands of miles each season and played for whichever team met his asking price, he pitched an estimated 2,500 games, had 300 shut-outs and 55 no-hitters. In one month in 1935, he reportedly pitched 29 consecutive games.
